So, You Think You Can Write Smut?

The EOS announces "Literate Smut", its First (and hopefully) Annual
BDSM Short Story Competition, open to all EOS Members. The winner
will be selected by EOS members, and will receive a $50.00 Gift
Certificate spendable at either Greenwoods Books or Audrey's Books.

Yes, you read it right: a WHOLE FIFTY BUCKS to spend on whatever you
want, provided they sell it at Audrey's or Greenwoods, the best
independent booksellers in Edmonton.

We are looking for the best "One-Handed Reading Material" we can
find. Stories must be previously unpublished, and between 1,000 and
5,000 words in length. No personal essays, memoirs, or non-fiction
please, but if it is based on real happenings, keep it all
confidential - do not use your story to "out" yourself or anyone
else. Stories must not have been previously published anywhere.
Entries must be submitted electronically, in text file. There is no
entry fee, and multiple entries are welcome.

Details about how to submit entries will be published later - for
now, just start writing.

Each entry will be placed on the EOS website, available for EOS
members (only) to read and enjoy. Though you should identify your
entry with your name (the same nickname you gave when you joined the
EOS), the webmaster will not reveal your name on your story until
after the contest is over. We don't want this to become a popularity
(or a lack-of-popularity) contest.

Therefore judging will be blind and a winner will be picked by EOS
members, voting electronically after reading the stories online at
the EOS website. As we approach the deadline we will open up the
website so that members can vote for their favourite story. Each
member will be entitled to one vote, and once cast, a vote cannot be
changed.

Only EOS members may enter. EOS Board members will have nothing to do
with selecting the winner, therefore the contest is open to EOS
officers and directors too, the ones who can read, anyway... :)

All entries must be received 4 p.m., Friday, 21 November 2008. No
late entries will be considered. The EOS website will be opened up
for voting a week later, on Friday 28 November 2008. A winner will be
announced at the 2008 EOS Christmas Party. The winner will receive
their fifty bucks just in time for Last Minute XMas Shopping. (is
there any other kind?)

GUIDELINES
We are interested in stories that fall under the general category
of "erotic BDSM", which is a fairly broad description. We are not
going to get picky about what flavour of erotic BDSM the author
chooses to focus on, though the winner will no doubt write about
something that appeals to the typical EOS member (assuming there is
such a thing as a typical EOS member...) However stories that do not
have erotic BDSM as a central theme must be rejected by the
webmaster. So if you want to publish the definitive short story on
say, Nudism or Plushy Play, you might want to look for another
contest. Otherwise we will leave it to the members to decide by their
votes which story has the highest merit.

As for content, we are not really in the business of censorship. For
example if you think sexually explicit language is necessary, go for
it. Just remember that sexually explicit language alone does not make
a story erotic or more readable.

There are few limitations, but the few we have are important. The
stories will be placed online. Even though the website is private,
that alone does not guarantee that non-members will not see the
stories. Whether we like it or not, they may be viewed and
read by people or groups who would use such stories against us.

Naturally we cannot deal with stories that have references to
children or animals. Even a passing reference will disqualify the
story. Also, non-consensuality is a delicate issue. We all know that
some of our hottest fantasies revolve around non-consensuality and
the web is full of them. But the EOS also does not want to be seen to
advocate actual violence or abuse. Therefore be careful with non-
consensuality in your story. Just be clear that it is fiction.

Good luck!

Sir Henrik,
EOS Literary Critic Emeritus

Master Conrad (Southwest Master 2006) has been actively involved with power exchange relationships and SM for most of his adult life. Conrad has consciously influenced his approach to SM and power exchange relationships with principles and techniques gleaned from sport science, NLP, English Common Law, martial arts, medieval vassalage and his personal religious path. He has a particular affinity for conquest and resistance play, cross-examination scenes, the erotic aspects of combat sports and canes (the cane being one of the most versatile, powerful and under rated of all SM tools). That being said, he views any and all SM activities as useful in achieving altered states, developing intimacy, and deepening power exchange experiences.
Master Conrad has worked in several occupations and avocations during his life, some of them too tedious, others too potentially embarrassing, to mention here. Currently he is the senior partner in a small law firm. He is a trial attorney and certified court mediator, specializing in Criminal Defense. He has appeared both in a representative capacity and as a legal commentor on both local and national television and radio broadcasts. As a Special Victims prosecutor and later as the 'special assignments' prosecutor for a large district attorney's office, he handled many kink related crimes and prosecutions of adult businesses. Later as a private attorney he has represented many diverse clients which have included adult businesses and those charged with alleged crimes arising from kink/SM related activities.
He is the Executive Director of MAsT International, a member of several local leather/ lifestyle/kink related organizations, and he presents and judges both locally and around the nation. He also teaches martial arts and law related classes to community and law enforcement organizations.

Research on SM
The research demonstrates that sadomasochistic individuals are well-adjusted persons who simply experience sex and eroticism differently than the norm.  |

EOS Orientation for prospective new members will be held at 3:30 pm during the Sunday munches and 7:30 pm during the Wednesday munches.

Please contact the Membership Director prior to these times to arrange to attend.

"These folks have done a great job of letting people know exactly what they are about. The website has a great FAQ format to describe the organization, its customs, events and rules. They had a calendar of munches with a good description of what to expect for newcomers. They also have a  calendar of other BDSM events in the Edmonton community. If you want they maintain a listserver for announcements and to let the group communicate via email."
